Most Popular American Snack - Hot Cheetos
It is made by Frito-Lay, a subsidiary of the company Pepsi..
Cheetos were ranked as the top-selling manufacturer of cheese puffs in the United States in 2010.
Except for the original Crunchy Cheetos, there are 21 more flavors available! The product selection often varies in the region where they’re sold, with Asian countries like China and Japan having Savory American Cream type and Strawberry Cheetos.
How did these snacks become so popular and iconic though?
It all started when Charles Elmer Doolin, the creator of Fritos, invented Cheetos in 1948, while he was trying to develop and research different flavors and chips in Dallas, Texas.
These light crisps were being sold really quickly and generally liked by customers. This partnership ended up being very important to the future of the food industry. After this success, many more companies began releasing their own products just like Utz Cheese Curls, Herr’s Cheese Curls and Wise Cheez Doodles.
Cheese-flavoured Chips became the new ‘it’ snack.
These events led to Cheetos being the 11th largest brand in the world. As of today, Cheetos are produced and distributed in three PepsiCo operating divisions: PepsiCo Americas Foods, PepsiCo Europe and PepsiCo Asia, Middle East and Africa.
But, what makes Cheetos so special?
In 1991, a flavor called The Flamin’ Hot Cheetos was launched and became one of Frito-Lay’s most popular products ever!
One day Richard brought the snacks home from work and coated the original Cheetos with Mexican chili powder.
This innovative idea made Montanez the vice president of PepsiCo’s branding and sales segment and was called “The Godfather of Multicultural Marketing”.
It led to hundreds of internet trends like the Hot Cheetos YouTube Challenge, Cheetos infused ice cream, donuts, cupcakes, macaroons and bagels, and even Flamin’ hot clothing! An actual Cheetos Museum with its audience’s photos existed in New York in 2017!
This brand is making new types of snacks year by year, brings new things to the market, and grows enormously in popularity.
Generally, Cheetos taste like a regular smoky corn-based crisp snack you can find pretty much everywhere. But what makes it pop from other products is the diverse selection of modified flavors and sizes.
Some popular flavors include Cheese Balls, Cheddar Jalapeño, and Chili Cheese.
First of all, these dusted crisps are coated with red powder which sometimes makes our stools turn red, blood-like. This weird occurrence led to many unneeded emergency cases and incidents in hospitals and ambulances.
Usually, red stools can be a symptom of stomach ulcers that are caused by bacteria infection or prolonged use with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It’s normal for parents to feel worried about their children’s health if their excrement has a weird color. Well, even diarrhea causes some trouble. Luckily (or not), it’s just those red Cheetos.
Spicy food can affect the development of these ulcers, but surely cannot cause them.
Experts say that kids that got gastritis after consuming spicy food are a very frequent case at hospitals
There is, like with everything, a risk of overeating, since, Cheetos, as a savory and light snack, are very addictive.
In addition, It is said that Cheetos can affect the stomach’s pH value, which can lead to other complications. Even Lil Xan, a famous rapper, was hospitalized due to a poor diet that included too many Cheetos, in 2018.
Nutrition-wise, Cheetos are loaded with saturated fat - the bad type of fat, sodium (can cause bloating), and a bunch of empty, unnecessary calories.
Like with every other food group, it’s important to emphasize that balancing our diets can afford eating Cheetos on some occasions. We all do crave that goodness called fast food.
But just, please don’t overdo it. Otherwise, your stomach could hurt really bad.
