Episode 01 takes us inside Free Range Cycles, a 790 square foot bike shop in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle, where owner Shawna Williams has been fixing bikes, building community, and figuring out how to run a business she loves since she was 27.
Shawna has a political science degree and years of learning on the job. In this conversation, she talks about what it actually means to run a small business in a trade: the customers who walk in and start describing their bodies before they've said hello, the winter she paid her employees out of personal savings because she couldn't bring herself to charge what the work was worth, and what it takes to build a space where people who've been othered feel genuinely welcome.
