Alaska is the America's Coldest, Emptiest, Wildest State. And Fairbanks, its 2nd largest city, is the Coldest, Darkest, Most Remote City in the USA with a population over 5,000 residents!
The average yearround temperature is just 28.3°F or -2°C makes it the 3rd coldest major city on Earth, and the December 2025 lows hit -30°F nearly every day!
The lowest air temperature ever recorded was -66°F, and there have been 20 seperate occasions where the air temperature failed to rise above -40°F (-40°C) for 10 consecutive days! Yes, the weather here is often colder here than McMurdo Station, Antarctica!

Fairbanks location at nearly 65 degrees North also means it gets less than 4 hours of daylight in the winter. And since it's the only city in the massive Alaskan interior (which spans nearly 230,000 square miles) it's also very remote! After Anchorage (360 miles away), the next closest city with a population greater than Fairbanks is Prince George, British Columbia in Canada at nearly 1700 miles or a 30 hr drive away!
