Organisations and activists pushing for vaping to be allowed in Singapore are usually made by companies which profit from legalisation, said Home Affairs K Shanmugam at an interview on Saturday (Aug 30).
"They say these ESDs (electronic smoking devices) electronic way of passing on nicotine is a safer alternative to conventional cigarettes. This is a kind of snake oil that these organisations peddle and they avoid saying it's harmful in itself," said Mr Shanmugam.
He also spoke at length on why Singapore does not take a harm reduction approach - reducing the harm associated with using drugs through a variety of public health interventions - and urged Singaporeans to "not be colonised in the mind" and to look at the evidence.
