Ingredients
Servings: 6
1 tblsp olive oil
½ lb ground Italian sausage
½ lb ground beef
1 cup(s) finely chopped onions
3 garlic cloves, minced
6 oz tomato paste
¼ cup(s) water
1 28-ounce can of crushed tomatoes
1 tblsp granulated sugar, or more to taste
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp salt
½ tsp freshly ground black pepper
½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
¼ cup(s) chopped parsley, plus more for garnish
1 lb rigatoni
Ricotta, for topping
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, for serving
Directions 10 steps | 50 Minutes
Step 1
First, heat your Dutch oven (or heavy-bottomed pot) over medium-to-high heat and add olive oil. Next, add both the sausage and the beef. Cook stirring occasionally until the meet is browned. This will take about 6-8 minutes.
Step 2
Then lower the heat to medium and add the chopped onions. Cook the onions for 3-4 minutes by stirring occasionally until they become softened.
Step 3
Add the garlic and stir occasionally for about 1 minute until the garlic becomes fragrant.
Step 4
Stir in the tomato paste next. You should stir occasionally for about 1-2 minutes until the paste becomes slightly darker in color.
Step 5
Then add the water, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom of the pan.
Step 6
Add crushed tomatoes and stir, mixing until the ingredients are well combined.
Step 7
Add sugar, Italian seasoning, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and parsley to the pan. You should bring the sauce to a boil and then down to a simmer. Simmer your bolognese sauce for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally throughout. As you stir, make sure to scrape down the bottom of the pot.
Step 8
While the sauce is simmering, begin boiling a pot of salted water on the side. Use this to cook the pasta until al dente.
Step 9
At this point, taste the sauce and add more seasoning if desired. Then add the pasta to the bolognese sauce. Make sure you toss the pasta so it is coated with the sauce evenly.
Step 10
