Man pleads guilty to reckless homicide in roommate's 2022 shooting death at Willoughby apartment

Kevin McCarthy, a man who was arrested last year after calling police to tell them he accidentally shot his roommate, returned to court where he pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless homicide in the case.
Prior to finalizing his guilty plea, the a Lake County Common Pleas judge told McCarthy that a maximum six-year prison sentence could be imposed -- three years for the reckless homicide charge and three years for the firearm specification -- along with a maximum fine of $10,000.
The case dates back to April 14, 2022, when Willoughby police say they received a call from McCarthy about the shooting at the Willogrove Apartments in the 37300 block of Grove Avenue.
Sentencing has been set for Wednesday, Feb. 22.
The 911 call, which was obtained by 3News, included the following conversation:
McCarthy: “I accidentally discharged a firearm and I accidentally shot my roommate.”
Dispatcher: “Does he need an ambulance?”
McCarthy: “No, he’s dead.”
When authorities arrived at the scene, police say McCarthy was found outside of the building and detained while additional officers responded to the apartment. That’s where police say 25-year-old Christian Kilburg was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
