July 1, 2022 Brentwood California "annexation"
Contra Costa County Fire Protection District (ConFire) made a significant announcement on July 1, 2022 regarding the annexation of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD). The primary objective of this annexation is to enhance the provision of fire and emergency medical services throughout the county, with a particular focus on the underserved East County communities. Officials have expressed their belief that this consolidation will enable them to achieve more by capitalizing on efficiencies and economies of scale.
The immediate benefits of the newly merged ConFire are evident in the improved fire and emergency medical services. These improvements include the deployment of additional crews and the establishment of new fire stations, which will effectively reduce response times. Notably, residents of the East County communities will now have access to advanced life-support capabilities provided by the fire crews.
Oakley has already witnessed the opening of the first new fire station, Fire Station 95, staffed by ConFire. This opening took place on June 1, 2022, preceding the annexation. Furthermore, plans are currently underway for the construction of two more fire stations in the city of Brentwood, with completion estimated for sometime in 2024.
With the annexation, the new fire district now encompasses the entire previous ECCFPD service area, resulting in a 45% expansion in geographic coverage from 304 to 553 square miles. Additionally, the population served by the consolidated organization has increased from 625,000 to 753,000 residents. Consequently, ConFire now extends its fire and emergency medical services to residents in 11 cities, as opposed to the previous nine, and 11 unincorporated areas within the county.
Brian Helmick, the former fire chief of the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District, expressed his agreement with the significance of this day. He stated, “Today is a landmark day in the evolution of fire and emergency medical services delivery in the communities formerly served by East Contra Costa Fire and across our county,“ he said. "I am proud of the efforts of our firefighters and staff in helping us achieve the goal of annexation and grateful for the support of our elected officials and fire partners in helping to make it possible."
