When a person suffers a stroke, quick and appropriate treatment is crucial. Does the day of the week when a person has their stroke affect the quality of treatment? Is a stroke patient's chance of survival better on a weekday or on a weekend?
Those are the questions researchers wanted to answer when they sifted through more than eight years worth of reports on every patient from every hospital in Virginia given a diagnosis of ischemic stroke; that's the type of stroke caused by a blood clot in the brain. The results indicate that patients admitted on weekends were just as likely to survive as those admitted on weekdays. What's more, the weekend patients were more likely to be treated with a clot busting drug called tissue plasminogen activators (tPA). tPA treatment is recommended if it can be given within three hours of the patient's first discernible stroke symptoms. The data couldn't tell researchers exactly why patients admitted on weekends were more likely to get the recommended tPA treatment, although some possible reasons might be that patients are more likely to quickly go to the hospital on weekends, or perhaps hospitals aren't as busy on weekends as they are during the week.
