Many Android applications are APK files. An APK file is essentially a Jar file that runs within the Dalvik virtual machine optimized for memory instead of the java virtual machine and contains a compiled manifest.xml. What APKTOOL does is allows you to take an APK file and convert it or decompress it into a format that is humanly readable without having to know the Java language.
