Rap in America was born in the early 1970s in the Bronx, New York. Young people, living amid poverty and abandoned buildings, were creating their own spaces. At street parties, DJs played the most rhythmic parts of records repeatedly, while MCs delivered rhymed, rhythmic words over the beats.
At first, it wasn’t even called “rap”; it was just a way to hype up the crowd. But soon, MCs began telling their life stories, their neighborhood struggles, and dreams through these words, and rap quickly became one of the most powerful music cultures in America.
In 1979, Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” officially brought rap to the stage and made it heard across the country.
In this video, discover how rap was born in America, how DJs and MCs shaped street culture, and how a music movement emerged from the streets.
