Bruce R. McConkie, a Seventy, started writing Mormon Doctrine in the 1940s. The book would be released in 1958 without church approval. It would become one of the most popular Mormon books ever released. It was also one of the most controversial! The Prophet David O. McKay had many concerns about the book. What denigrating remarks did McConkie make about the Catholic church? What did Apostle / President Joseph Fielding Smith, McConkie’s father-in-law, think about the book? Did Apostle Mark E. Petersen find over 1,000 errors in the first edition? Was the book banned in 1960? Was McConkie sent away on a mission to Australia to lesson his influence on members? Did McConkie and Apostle / President Joseph Fielding Smith manipulate David O. McKay in 1966 to get Mormon Doctrine republished? McKay was 92 years old by this time and was losing his memory. How many changes were made to the second edition? What were some of these changes? Did the book go through 40 printings, selling hundreds of thousands of copies? Does the book contain many racist teachings? Was Mormon Doctrine one of the most quoted books in LDS instructional manuals? Why did the church stop publishing the book in 2010? Why has the church stopped quoting from the book in its manuals?
