Vovousa was one of the key locations involved in the Italian advance through the Pindus Mountains in early November 1940. As the Italian Julia Alpine Division pushed south from Albania, one of its regiments moved toward Vovousa in an attempt to secure crossings and mountain routes leading toward Metsovo. The village sat in a narrow valley surrounded by steep, forested slopes, making it tactically important for controlling movement through the central Pindus range. Italian forces entered and briefly occupied Vovousa around November 2–3, 1940, using it as a forward position while continuing their advance deeper into Greek territory.
