It's September of the year 1780. The American Revolutionary War is in its 4th year. British forces have pursued American Patriots across South Carolina, into North Carolina and the settlement of Charlottetown. The Mecklenburg Militia have taken up defensive positions in, and around, the court house in the center of town. And they wait. It’s not long before the British Army approaches. A firefight breaks out and the crack of rifles fills the air. The fight pitches back and forth. Eventually, the British gain the upper hand, driving the militia from the courthouse and sending them fleeing. At least for now, the rule of King George has been restored to the colony.
All this and more, as reenactors recreate the Battle of Charlotte here at Union County's “Museum of the Waxhaws.”
