Abandoned Northern State Asylum

Описание: Once the largest mentally ill facility in the state of Washington, the now abandoned Northern State Asylum was established in 1909, opening in 1912 as a self-sustaining and therapeutic colony for the mentally ill. It boasted over 700 acres of farmland for livestock and vegetables with a greenhouse, canning facilities, water reservoir and sewage system. It also included a lumbar mill, quarry and a steam plant.
The dairy barns and milking sheds were built in 1921.
Northern State reached its maximum capacity of 2,700 patients in the 1950s but they were still pressured to taking more people.
1976 saw the closure of the facility due to the state legislature cutting off all funding. Although some of the original buildings have been repurposed and are used for rehabilitation.
The old cemetery holds at least 1,500 graves, each with just a number.
