You’re not going to beat your vices by fighting them… you beat them by replacing them.
Allah ﷻ gives us a line that most people quote… and then stop too early:

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ
“Indeed, prayer prevents indecency and wrongdoing…”
(29:45)

But they miss the most crucial bit:

وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ
“…but the remembrance of Allah ﷻ is greater.”
(29:45)

And that’s the secret.
Allah ﷻ doesn’t just tell you to stop. He gives you what to replace it with — and He shows you which part of the ṣalāh does it: dhikr, real presence with Allah ﷻ.
This truth is a divine reality that the Prophet ﷺ affirmed:

إِنَّكَ لَنْ تَدَعَ شَيْئًا لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِلَّا بَدَّلَكَ اللَّهُ بِهِ مَا هُوَ خَيْرٌ لَكَ
“You do not leave anything for Allah’s ﷻ sake except that He replaces it for you with that which is better than it.”
[Ahmad, Ṣaḥīḥ]

The hadith is clear! You do not give up anything - you just replace it with whats better!

So whats the greatest pleasure you can experience? Presence of Allah (swt), specifically in prayer! That's what the verse was saying

وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ
“…but the remembrance of Allah ﷻ is greater.”
(29:45)

If you learnt how to pray properly — with real khushūʿ — every other pleasure would pale in comparison. The Prophet ﷺ said the most pleasurable thing to him was prayer. That’s not abstract; it’s what ṣalāh can become when done the Prophetic way.

But that pleasure comes with effort. And that’s why Allah ﷻ distinguishes between ṣalāh and dhikr — even though they’re inseparable. Ṣalāh is the outward form and discipline; dhikr is the purpose and outcome. If you’re willing to learn and practise, you will taste what prayer was always meant to be.

In fact, Allah ﷻ describes that state as أَكْبَرُ (akbar) — greater. Left open-ended so you fill in the blank: greater in joy, greater in pleasure, greater in peace… it swallows every comparison.

Today, for many of us, ṣalāh has become a fulfilment of duty rather than a meeting of presence. And that’s why it feels ineffective — because we’re missing what Allah ﷻ wants from it, as He says in Sūrah Ṭā Hā:

وَأَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ لِذِكْرِىٓ
“Establish prayer for My remembrance.”
(20:14)

So we finish this series on addictions with two services: the Break Free Clinic and the Ṣalāh Clinic.
