Ivan IV, known as Ivan the Terrible, was one of Russia’s most feared tsars. In November 1581, during a heated argument, he struck his son and heir, Tsarevich Ivan Ivanovich, with an iron-tipped staff. The blow was fatal, and the young man died a few days later.
The dispute began when Ivan reprimanded his daughter-in-law for dressing “immodestly” and assaulted her. His son stepped in to defend her, triggering the tsar’s uncontrollable rage. That moment of fury sealed his heir’s fate and altered the course of the dynasty.
In 1885, Russian painter Ilya Repin immortalized this moment in Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan. The scene shows the tsar kneeling, cradling his dying son, his face filled with horror and regret, while the room bears the clear signs of a violent struggle.
The painting caused a strong reaction when first exhibited. It was criticized for depicting such a dark episode in Russian history and was even censored. In 2018, a museum visitor vandalized it, striking the canvas with a metal pole.
Today, it remains one of the most intense and controversial works of Russian art.
