Robert Schumann, despite fair amount of people appreciating him, is one of the most underappreciated and misunderstood composers of all time. The countless "accusations" of his compositional ability, compared to other composers, from the public over time prove this, which includes:
1. Schumann was best solely on piano (or maybe Lieder)...
2. Schumann's late works from late 1840s to 1850s contain signs of madness and musicality therefore suffers(!)...
3. Schumann couldn't handle large forms...
4. Schumann was a bad orchestrator...
Perhaps Schumann's great music is such on both personal and yet spiritual level, that it's difficult to be understood by the majority of the public. Or perhaps we are so used to appreciating music from Beethoven, Brahms, etc that we falsely anchor them as absolute standards and dismiss Schumann's own beauty.
When I came across this wonderful audio from Leonard Bernstein and Deutsche Grammophon, I decided to create a video from it, with subtitles and images to go along. A genius recognizes a genius, so let's listen to Bernstein talk about Schumann's orchestration and his Second Symphony in C major, Op. 61.
Note: After further research, I have noticed that Beethoven uses trombones for last two movements of Symphony No. 6 and 2nd movement also for Symphony No. 9.
