Early spring in the garden is full of surprises. Even after a long Canadian winter, some crops are already waking up.
In this March garden tour, I go looking for signs of life and find quite a few! Overwintered vegetables like spinach, leeks, and parsnips made it through the cold, and the rhubarb is already starting to emerge. I also show a simple rhubarb forcing trick that can give you an earlier harvest in spring.
If you garden in a cold climate (Zones 4–6), this is a great reminder that not everything in the garden needs to start from seed every year. Some crops are surprisingly resilient and can reward you with very early harvests.
