Van Cliburn achieved international acclaim in 1958 when he won the first Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow, just months after the Soviet launch of Sputnik. At a moment when global attention was focused on scientific and technological achievement, leading Russian cultural figures—among them Shostakovich, Emil Gilels, Kabalevsky, Rostropovich, and David Oistrakh—recognized the importance of giving classical music equal prominence.
