Transport for Wales Class 153 382 and 153 552 2J66 1719 Crewe to Shrewsbury departing Crewe on the West Coast Mainline in the West Midlands on 1st August 2025.
Crewe Railway Station is one of the most important and historic railway junctions in the United Kingdom. Located in the town of Crewe, Cheshire, it serves as a major interchange on the West Coast Main Line, linking southern England with the Midlands, North West, Scotland, and North Wales.
The West Coast Main Line (WCML) is one of the UK’s major railway lines, running from London Euston to Glasgow Central and branching to several key cities along the way. Knownfor its high-speed services and significant role in connecting England and Scotland, the WCML is a crucial rail corridor for both passenger and freight traffic.
The Transport for Wales Class 153 is a single-car diesel multiple unit that operates on rural and branch line routes across Wales. Originally built in the late 1980s by British Rail Engineering Limited as part of the Class 155 units, they were later converted into single-coach trains to improve flexibility on less busy lines. With a top speed of around 75 mph, these units are well suited for local services where passenger numbers are relatively low but regular connections are still essential.
Their compact size allows them to serve remote communities, often running on scenic routes through the Welsh countryside. Although not the most spacious or modern, the Class 153 plays a vital role in keeping rural Wales connected, offering reliable links between small towns and larger transport hubs.
Transport for Wales Rail No 153552 became the first of six upgraded Class 153s to enter service on the Central Wales line between Swansea and Shrewsbury on 25 February 2025.
While similar to ScotRail’s ‘Highland Explorer’ Class 153s in concept, TfW’s fleet will have more seating and space for 10 bicycles and e-bikes. They will run in pairs with a standard Class 153, enhancing capacity on the line to 108 seats – an increase of 42. They will have a special livery celebrating landmarks on the route (source TFW website)
