In the summer of 1518, a woman stepped into the streets of Strasbourg and began to dance. She didn’t stop.
Within days, dozens joined her. Within weeks, hundreds were dancing uncontrollably in the heat, some collapsing, some reportedly dying from exhaustion, heart attacks, and stroke.
In this episode of High History, we break down one of the strangest recorded events in European history — the Dancing Plague of 1518. Was it mass hysteria? Ergot poisoning (medieval LSD bread)? Religious panic tied to Saint Vitus? Or something else entirely?
History is weird, but humans are weirder.
Welcome to High History, where the past is unbelievable, but always real.
