This symposium will explore the intersection of architecture and deafness including the architecture of schools for the deaf (the past), “Deaf Space” (the present) and the impact of evolving technology and cultural attitudes toward deafness (the future). "Deafness and Architecture" is organized by Edward Steinfeld, UB architecture professor and director of the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access at the School of Architecture and Planning; and Michael Rembis, UB associate professor of history and director of UB's Center for Disability Studies.
The purpose of this symposium is to learn about multiple perspectives on deafness and the design implications of advancing technology for deaf culture, social participation and design of the built environment.
The discussion will seek to address questions such as:
How can the architectural profession accommodate colleagues who are deaf or hard of hearing?
What is the future of schools for the deaf and higher education for deafness?
How can people who are deaf and hard of hearing participate more fully in the design process?
Learning Objectives
1. Describe and critique the history of architecture for deafness.
2. Illustrate how changing attitudes toward disability have led to new approaches, policies and regulations to accommodate people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
3. Describe the principles of deaf space, a new paradigm for design facilities for people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
4. Identify how advances in technology present both challenges and opportunities for architectural design.
5. Discuss the relationship of deaf space to accessible and universal design.
Our guest speakers bring expert perspectives as designers, users and innovators in the space between architecture and deafness.

Spring 2019 Public Programs: Discursive Practices
DISCURSIVE PRACTICES presents the work of architects, urban planners, preservationists and historians whose approach to design bridges multiple territories of knowledge to create new work.
Their provocations operate on discourses that simultaneously have long historical traditions and are actively evolving in the present. By acknowledging and engaging with the cultural and institutional basis of inherited knowledge systems, these speakers challenge reductive modes of analysis and reveal openings for expanding the social reach and relevance of contemporary design.
The public lecture series of the School of Architecture and Planning is supported by the following individuals and companies:
AIA Buffalo/WNY | Architectural Resources | CannonDesign |The InnBuffalo | Lori Duckstein | Mach Architecture | Marc ’92 and Jorrie Bruffett | Pella Window and Door | Viviane Jammal | Will and Nan Clarkson
