On December 8, 2022, a Trooper in Erie County, Ohio spotted a Jeep Wrangler speeding at 100mph+ and initiated a traffic stop outside of Sandusky on the south shore of Lake Erie
Upon approaching the vehicle, the Trooper noticed the smell of cannabis and asked the driver to step out with his identification. After a short review of the driver’s license and asking the New York man a few questions, the Trooper was fairly certain that the man was not who he said he was.
The Trooper continued his investigation by asking additional questions to attempt to confirm his identity, but the man continued to stall and offer excuses. After this went on for a few minutes, the Trooper allowed the driver to get his coat, hat and scarf from the Jeep and continued the investigation by attempting to figure out why the man was offering a fake ID and why the Jeep smelled like cannabis.
The man was not as patient and decided he’d had enough when the Trooper asked him to sit in the front seat of the patrol car. He attempted to walk back to his Jeep when the Trooper blocked him and attempted to gain compliance. A struggle became a fight as he tried to drive away and the trooper struck the man in the face and legs as he attempted to keep him from shifting the car into drive.
Unfortunately, the man was able to break free and accelerated in reverse while the trooper was still halfway in the car. As the Trooper rolled out of the way and lost his hat, the Jeep rammed the patrol car and took off with the Trooper trying to catch up
For 25 minutes, the man fled at over 100mph while coming perilously close to other drivers and truckers just trying to get to their destination. The Troopers spiked the Jeep multiple times while blocking access to surface street exits and interchanges in an attempt to keep him on a limited access road, but the man was not interested in complying as he blasted through a toll plaza like a Kool Aid man and continued his rampage into Toledo
After spikes had destroyed at least one possibly two tires on the Jeep, the man’s luck began running out. As they attempted to block him from an exit, he forced his way on and tried to pass a patrol car on the narrow ramp before ramming it, losing control, crashing off the wall into a wheelie and stopping in a median near the on-ramp merge area before running on foot with Troopers giving chase.
The man was tackled into a ravine and went off on an epic rant that see-sawed between heartbreak that he wouldn’t see his son for a long time and accusations of police brutality – none of which there is any evidence for.
The man was booked for drug possession, drug trafficking, identity theft, obstruction, failure to comply, assault, and felonious assault. A judge set bond at $25,000 and required full payment instead of the usual 10%.
The offender agreed to a plea deal in 2024 and was sentenced to two years each for two felonious assault charges and another two years for failure to comply. After adding another 11 months for vandalism, he is scheduled for release in November 2027
The Troopers of this Ohio State Patrol post showed determination, comittment and courage that night and we add our voices to those praising them for their dedication to protecting the community. Driving while intoxicated is a seriouis problem and cases like this send the message that it won’t be tolerated. But cases like this also show that if you fight law enforcement, you’re only going to amplify the problem, stack charges, and sit in a hole for even longer. Well, as long as you’re not in Cook County, Illinois, that is.
We thank the Troopers for their work and for trying to talk some sense into the offender when he tried to say he did it for his son and shame the Troopers who didn’t have children. Having children doesn’t make anyone better than anyone else. It proves nothing. And these Troopers were not intimidated by it.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law – like this guy was.
