The Kumara Parvatha trek, located in the Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka, is one of the most popular and challenging treks in South India.
Here is a detailed description:
Overview and Highlights
Peak Altitude: Approximately 1,712 meters (5,617 feet).
Distance: The round trip from the most popular starting point, Kukke Subrahmanya, is about 24–26km.
Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult. It is a very demanding trek due to continuous, steep ascent and descent over long distances, making it generally not recommended for absolute beginners.
Landscape: The trail offers incredible diversity, passing through:
Dense, old-growth forests with thick canopy.
Expansive, rolling green grasslands.
Rocky, challenging ascents towards the final peaks.
Breathtaking panoramic views of the Western Ghats from the peaks.
The Trek Route (from Kukke Subrahmanya)
The route from the Kukke Subrahmanya temple side is the most common and challenging. It is generally divided into two main sections:
Day 1: Base to Forest Office/Bhattara Mane (Approx. 5km)
Start: The trail begins near the Kukke Subrahmanya temple.
Initial Ascent: The trek starts with a continuous, steep climb through a dense, shaded forest.
Checkpoints: You will pass the Bheemana Bande (Bheema Rock), a rest stop.
End Point: The forest section ends as you reach the open grasslands. You will arrive at the Forest Office (where permits are checked/obtained and camping is designated) and a private rest stop called Bhattara Mane, where food and basic accommodation are available (must be pre-arranged).
Day 2: Forest Office to Kumara Parvatha Peak (Approx. 7 km one way)
The Challenging Section: This part is the most strenuous, with little to no tree cover and very steep climbs.
Kallu Mantapa: An important rest stop along the grassland section.
Shesha Parvatha: You first summit the neighboring peak, Shesha Parvatha, which offers spectacular views and is a major high point on the trek.
The Final Push: After a short descent, the path enters a second, smaller forest section, followed by a demanding final climb over massive rocks to reach the ultimate Kumara Parvatha Peak.
Best Time to Trek
The ideal time for the Kumara Parvatha trek is during the post-monsoon and winter seasons:
October to February: The weather is most pleasant, with clear skies offering the best views and cooler temperatures for trekking.
Avoid: Trekking in the peak monsoon (June to September) is extremely difficult as the trail becomes very slippery, mucky, and prone to leeches, though the greenery is at its most vibrant. Summer (March to May) can be very hot and humid, especially in the exposed grassland sections.
Food: Bhattara Mane offers simple food(subject to availability and booking).
