FANTASY GENERAL 2, THE GAME
The video game Fantasy General 2 is the reimagination of the classic strategy game Fantasy General from 1996 developed by SSI. Both games are situated in high fantasy worlds and sport turn-based strategy combat on hex fields. The original Fantasy General was based on the highly acclaimed Panzer General concept and introduced new rules like wounds or spells and magical artifacts. It was considered by some to be the true (and worthy) successor to the Panzer General throne.
In the original the player could choose to represent one of four different generals with unique advantages depending on the play style. The ultimate goal was to defeat the Shadowlord and to get to him six continents ruled by the Shadowlord's four generals and himself had to be conquered. The player had to fight through around 55 missions in an epic but storywise rather simple struggle.
The new Fantasy General 2 features some deeper storytelling with nice twists - but only around 23 missions in the first main campaign. Graphics are modernized and pretty nice, the world building is great with a high attention to detail. More DLCs with more campaigns are in development, as of 2025 three have been published: Fantasy General 2 Evolution, Onslaught and Empire Aflame.
In the classic Fantasy General there were four unit categories: Mortal, Magical, Beast and Mechanical. These came with different damage types, strengths and weaknesses. Non-mortal units were usually stronger, but could not be upgraded and would eventually become obsolete as the player researched new units. The old game featured a research tree where the player could decide whether to research certain units of ten different classes and how quickly to invest the spoils of war into said research. These classes consisted of light or heavy infantry, light cavalry, cavalry, skirmishers, archers, sky hunters, bombardiers, siege engines and spell casters. Depending on factors like environment or defense values certain types of these dozens upon dozens of units and special heroes would be strong against certain others just like in a scissor paper rock system. The AI challenged the player, the old game was therefore very interesting especially for players who wanted to think intelligently.
In Fantasy General 2 unit variety and their development is more limited but other ways for improvement are introduced: more magical artifacts and equipment and many unique abilities and skills that can be found or trained during the campaign. The new game is certainly more accessible for new players than the old one has been.
The new Fantasy General 2 was developed by Owned by Gravity and published by Slitherine Ltd. in 2019.
NEW HERE?
My callsign is Hardball, PlayingHardball. I have always loved gaming. I am passionate about games as forms of art and ways of exploring narratives in interactive ways. I have been playing video games nearly all my life, on the internet for a few years now. I enjoy a great variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (like Mass Effect, Disco Elysium, The Witcher, etc), strategy/tactical elements (like XCOM, Panzer Corps, Total War etc), and RPGs (like Cyberpunk 2077, newer Fallout titles etc) and especially CRPGs (like Baldur's Gate, Fallout 1 and 2 or Pathfinder etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!
