Heat shrink tubing is commonly used to insulate wires and cable joints. But what is it? What’s special about it? It’s all in the name really: Watch how fast a piece of thin-walled tubing shrinks when Mark applies heat to it with an electric heat gun – even without a deflector.

He explains to Barry that heat shrink tubing is made in one size (recovered dimension) and then expanded (supplied dimension). When heated, it shrinks back to its original size.
Heat shrink tubing is excellent for insulating, protecting and marking all kinds of cable joints. It’s available in different colours, wall thicknesses and shrink ratios from 2:1 to 6:1, to suit different application needs.
