STORYLINE:
Members of the Shiite Muslim community in Pakistan took to the streets of the southern port city of Karachi on Monday to protest the war in the Middle East after the United States and Israel attacked Iran.
It follows violent clashes between protesters and security forces on Sunday which left at least 22 people dead and more than 120 others injured in the city as demonstrators supportive of the Iranian government attempted to storm a U.S. Consulate, Pakistani authorities said.
Protesters, holding placards and banners denouncing the U.S. and Israel attacks, demanded on Monday the release of those involved in attacking the consulate a day earlier.
“Our children have been arrested; they have been martyred and those who martyred them should be booked under the law and brought to justice. The detained persons should be released without delay,” said Mirza Yousuf Hussain, a local scholar.
The violence in Pakistan comes after the killing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in U.S. and Israeli strikes across Iran on Saturday which triggered anger amongst Shiite Muslims in the country.
Police and officials at a hospital in Karachi said that at least 50 people were also wounded in the clashes and some of them were in critical condition.
