Humans have inhabited the Cotswolds for around 6,000 years and evidence of their existence here survives close to Bourton-on-the-Water at Salmonsbury Camp, as well as elsewhere in the Cotswolds. Yet few people visit this hidden gem at Greystones Farm Nature Reserve to get the sense of history and wonderment because they enjoy the attractions of the bustling village centre of nearby Bourton-on-the-Water. We also visit Lower and Upper Slaughter, two idyllic rural villages that have grown organically and evolved over many hundreds of years around their Manor Houses. It was the Lord of the Manor who provided employment and housing for the villagers and also patronage for the village school and church.
The feudal system has long gone and many Manor Houses have disappeared, but the two in the villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter have survived and been converted to luxury hotels.
