‘Drastic troop reduction’ in Afghanistan an ‘imprudent surrender’ by Trump

United States troops will decrease by 500 personnel in Iraq and by 2,000 in Afghanistan in a bid to bring more service members home.

Mr Ware said the “drastic troop reduction” was ill advised and not supported by a number of high-profile figures.

“The American commander in Afghanistan recently filed a report that said the conditions are not right for withdrawal right now”.

The NATO Secretary-General said that any withdrawal now poses a very high risk of the establishment of an Islamic state caliphate.

“Even the Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell yesterday said that if the world superpower is seen as picking up its ball and going home, then America’s enemies will just love it.

Mr Ware said the significant reduction in Afghanistan troops “feels like imprudent surrender by an American President.”

American forces invaded Afghanistan in 2001 when a US-led coalition took action against the Taliban weeks after the 9/11 attacks in the US by al-Qaeda.
