Three monasteries cling to cliffs so steep, builders hung to carve them. Taktsang Palphug Monastery in Bhutan sits 900 metres above the Paro Valley. Legend says Guru Rinpoche arrived on a tigress in the 8th century; the temple was built in 1692. San Babilo Hermitage in Aragon, Spain, is wedged into a sheer limestone wall. A single narrow path is the only way up; the hermit who chose this ledge remains a mystery. Ostrog Monastery in Montenegro is carved into a vertical cliff near Danilovgrad. Saint Basil of Ostrog founded it in the 1600s; his relics still draw pilgrims of three faiths.
