POPEYE THE SAILOR was one of many comic strip legends heard over the air in the Golden Age of Radio. His adventure series began September 10, 1935, and aired in three versions until 1938. Of 204 episodes, only 20 reportedly exist today, with just 4 of those episodes circulating the internet.
In the first season, Olive Oyl (Olive Maloy) and Wimpy (Charles Lawrence) are heard with a young boy named Matey (Jimmy Donnelly) a character possibly created as a substitute for SweePea who couldn't talk.
Since the sponsor was Wheatena a hot cereal, Popeye needed a nourishing bowl of it for super strength instead of spinach. If you can take that in, the program is still a lot of fun.
"Popeye and the Gang at the Zoo". NBC Red Network.
**Some sources claim this episode was broadcast Thursday, November 14, 1935. If so just imagine you are listing to it before dinner on a cold Depression-era night.
Cast: Kelvin Keech (announcer), Detmar Poppen (Popeye), Olive Lamoy (Oliver Oyl), Charles Lawrence (Wimpy), Jimmy Donnelly (Matey).
