⚓ Traditional Sea Shanty
Authentic sailor work song inspired by 18th–19th century maritime folk.
Call and response vocals, rough male chorus, and rhythms once used by sailors to haul ropes and raise sails.

The night lay still on a breathless sea,
No star to guide nor wind set free,
Our compass spun in a silent dread,
As mist rolled thick where the horizon bled.
A shadow moved where no ship should be,
Drifting slow through eternity,
With tattered sails that did not sway
And lanterns casting a ghostly gray.
Her hull was carved with a thousand scars,
Barnacled ribs and broken spars,
No living soul upon her deck,
Yet none could call her but a wreck.
A frozen hand upon the wheel,
A captain crowned in rusted steel,
His hollow gaze toward endless night,
Still steering by a dead man’s light.
Down… down beneath the black tide rolling,
Where the drowned keep softly calling,
Cold… cold are the hands that reach,
From silent depths beyond our speech.
The sea grew thick like oil and grave,
The waters stilled, no crest nor wave,
Our timbers groaned in whispered fright
As lanterns burned with wicked light.
We heard no step yet felt them near,
A breath of salt, a breath of fear,
As if the deep itself had eyes
And watched us drift toward our demise.
Gold means nothing in that place,
Nor prayer nor steel nor captain’s grace,
For once you see that emerald flame,
The ocean carves you without a name.
Down… down beneath the black tide rolling,
Where the drowned keep softly calling,
Cold… cold is the sailor’s sleep,
Claimed forever by the deep.
Lanterns fade but still they gleam,
Haunting every sailor’s dream—
Down… down where shadows creep,
Forever bound beneath the deep.
