Episode #43 In early 1892, just weeks after Dr. James Naismith invented basketball at the Springfield, YMCA Training Center in Massachusetts, a group of young female teachers from Buckingham Grade School walked into the nearby Y basement gym — and helped change the game forever. In this episode, we explore how women’s basketball began not in a college arena, but in an open gym. The Buckingham teachers, curious after hearing the shouts from the basement gym, stepped onto the balcony and witnessed the new game in progress. Within weeks, they were asking Naismith for their own time on the court. This is the story of how women grade school teachers spread basketball beyond a class assignment — and how an open gym became the social crossroads that led to Miss Sherman becoming Mrs. Naismith.
