Clay Wheeler, a supposedly law-abiding citizen of a Texas cattle town, is really the head of a gang of outlaws. When the wealthy father of Letty Cranston and the sheriff and a doctor are all killed, Texas Ranger Jeff Hayden shows up, undercover, to investigate. He suspects Wheeler, especially after the latter takes over the sheriff's office, and becomes engaged to Letty and seems to have some sort of lien on her property. Jeff rescues her from a runaway buggy, a near tragedy engineered by some of Wheeler's gang. When Wheeler sees that a romance is blossoming between Jeff and Letty, he starts a rumor that Jeff is hanging out with saloon dancer Lolita which upsets Letty and enrages Ortego, Lolota's sweetheart. Ortego attempts to murder Jeff and fails miserable and even ends up spilling the beans about Wheeler's involvement with the killings. Meanwhile, Letty,who is really, really hacked off about Lolita, is about to get married to Wheeler.
