The Northrop Grumman E-8A J-STARS was a surveillance platform operated by both the US Army and Air Force. In the Gulf, both would crew the two E-8As based at Ridyah in Saudi Arabia, going on 10-12 hour long missions to look for Iraqi units, from artillery to low flying helicopters, before giving the raw data to a ground controller, which would help orchestrate an attack on these positions by USAF strike aircraft.
