QUEEN
Tour: A Night At The Opera // Leg 2: USA
Venue: Beacon Theater
City: New York City, New York, USA
Date: February 6th, 1976
Taped from the third row, this alternate source from Queen’s second show at the Beacon Theater only came into circulation around 2020. It paints a much more complete picture of the show as it isn’t quite as incomplete, presenting the songs cut on the first source and also featuring second encore for the first time ever (and damn, what a blistering rendition of ‘Jailhouse Rock’, absolutely one of the greatest performances of the cover). The only missing song is ‘Now I’m Here’, which is still only on the first source. The quality is quite better overall despite some issues with bass distortion and some other issues, and the speed issues present on the first source aren’t present here. This tape is also quite bass-heavy, so the Deacy lovers can get to enjoy his playing quite clearly.
Despite being a small venue, this audience is absolutely INSANE and you can just hear the excitement surrounding this new group as proven by the audience literally screaming during the intro tape and being pretty enthusiastic throughout, I love the guy screaming for 'Great King Rat' a couple times. The energy is quite present throughout, and the people of New York give a hell of a welcome back to Queen. Freddie's in solid shape, though noticeably weaker than the likes of Boston (he's also starting to bark out notes a bit more, as heard during the 'Ogre Battle' final verse, or even softer songs like 'White Queen', this can be explained with the long runs of shows (Boston-Philly is a 5 night run, New York is a 4 night run). Despite this, he still tries his best to give them a good show. Despite being early in the 1976 leg, the band plays like a well-oiled machine, giving some fantastic performances on the instrumental side of things. Things take a bit to pick up, but from 'Brighton Rock' onwards, with a godly 'The Prophet's Song' vocal solo, a fucking INSANE 'Stone Cold Crazy' in which the band is absolutely going off, a fantastic 'Doing Alright', the band extending out the intro to 'Keep Yourself Alive', and a great 'Liar' with Roger drumming his ass off, the boys are absolutely popping off with the exception of 'Now I'm Here', which is oddly bland (also, it's entirely missing from this tape lol).
