Описание: Black-headed Herons (Ardea melanocephala) are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa. They take a wide variety of vertebrate and invertebrate prey and often hunt in wetlands and flooded grassland as is the case here. The adult Heron had caught and subdued a large toad, probably a Red Toad (Schismaderma carens), and was attempting to swallow it when an immature Heron moved in, wanting a share of the catch. The adult Heron repelled the younger bird and then struggled to swallow the large toad. It finally succeeded – you can see the bulge in the adult Heron’s neck as the toad slides down the Heron’s gullet.
