What does it actually cost to live by yourself in America?
Not to live well. Not to save anything. Just to rent a
one-bedroom, keep the lights on, eat, get to work, stay insured,
and end the month at zero.
We build the number from the bottom up, one line at a time —
rent, utilities, food, the true cost of a car, health insurance,
phone and internet — then work backwards through tax to find the
hourly wage you need to earn to make it all close.
The answer is $28.90 an hour.
The median American worker earns $29.75.
