Today we're driving through the quiet streets of Tournai again in our trusty old car – a typical day for a Belgian pensioner. ☕🚘 The sun is breaking through the clouds, the temperature is around 6–8°C, there's a light breeze, the River Escaut flows quietly past historic houses… and it's time to think about what life is like here in retirement.
Briefly about the Belgian pension (as of 2026):

The average pension is approximately €1,200–1,600 net per month (depending on length of service, salary, and marital status).
The minimum (with 45 years of total service) is approximately €1,300–1,500 for a single person, higher for families.
A full pension starts at age 67 (gradually increasing), but you can retire earlier with a reduced amount.
Plus various additional payments: for children, for low income (GRAPA—guaranteed minimum of €1,200–€1,500), heating, and medical benefits.
Healthcare is almost free for retirees, along with transport discounts and tax breaks.

Life is quiet: enough for utilities, food, a car, the occasional cafe or short trip around Europe. Many retirees here actively walk their dogs, go to brocantes, meet up with friends, and travel by train at reduced fares. It's not luxurious, but it's decent and stress-free—the main thing is that health is covered, while the prices for basic necessities are skyrocketing, especially this year. Prices for food, clothing, and other essentials have doubled! After paying taxes, rent, internet, gasoline, and insurance, my pension only leaves €400 for the entire month!
