Last month I ran some numbers to see what my savings rate was hovering around. I was happy to see I had achieved a 70% savings rate. When I first moved out on my own my goal was to have a savings rate of at least 50% so that I could pursue FIRE (Financial Independence Retire Early). I knew that there was a relationship between your savings rate and the date that you could step away from work.

What most people don't know is that retirement doesn't have to be 20-40 years away. If you can crank up your savings rate to a high level and maintain a lifestyle that you're comfortable with, retirement can be less than 10 years away.

Of course, early retirement doesn't have to mean you stop working. It just means you can work on your own terms and only do what you love.
