EcoRocket: Episode 7 - EcoRocket First Jump

Описание: EcoRocket's first stage demonstrator performed today the first jump under the landing engine.We followed exactly the same procedure as in the case of the full duration engine run that will follow in short time.

We wanted to check mainly if the rocket’s attitude is kept vertical, taking into account that it involves an unguided sequence and we also wanted to check all subsystems functionality.

The EcoRocket’s first stage will descend to earth under a drogue parachute and the vehicle will keep it’s vertical attitude due to the drogue parachute and no attitude control via other aerodynamic surfaces or RCS s or engine gimbal would be necessary.

Now, we received a comment asking why use a landing engine when a parachute can do the job of bringing back to earth at a very low speed a 400kg first stage. Well, you should also take into account that the EcoRocket is a demonstrator for the EcoRocket Heavy that will have a huge first stage. It will not be possible to bring that heavy stage down safely without a landing engine.

The EcoRocket's landing engine has 700kg of thrust and it will decelerate the first stage, that will fall under the drogue parachute, from around 70m/s to zero. The engine will start at an altitude of around 150m, and it will run for a duration of 9 seconds.
