LAwave technology allows fast and non-destructive access to mechanical properties of coatings and surfaces. The influence of pores, cracks and delamination, as well as structural and material changes, can be detected by measuring the effective Young’s modulus. Applications include thin film coatings (PVD, CVD, ALD), thick films (e.g. thermal spray, laser cladding), 3D printed metals, semiconductor polishing and many more. The method is based on the spectroscopy of laser-induced surface acoustic waves and is used in quality control and R&D. Fraunhofer IWS develops customized measurement systems for industry and academia.
