A case from Ahmedabad was recently reported in which a man lost Rs 7 lakh to an Instagram fraudster who claimed to bring a free iPhone 14 from Dubai. The scammer messaged the victim on the social media app, stating, “Congratulations! You’ve won a free iPhone 14 from Bade Bhai and Chhote Bhai. Just pay a small fee of Rs 3,000. Use UPI to pay on the given number.”

The police have reported multiple occurrences of the ‘Bade Bhai’ scam, in which victims receive phone calls from unknown individuals posing as callers from Dubai. But what exactly is this scam, and why are criminals dialing numbers with the country code +92?

The +92 country code is for Pakistan, and there have been allegations of scammers targeting Indian nationals over WhatsApp. The callers, however, are not from Pakistan. According to the authorities, there is no participation of any Pakistani individual in the aforesaid case, and the fraudsters utilized a virtual number to contact the victim and commit the fraud.

While calls and texts promising free gifts or lucrative deals can be alluring, they are frequently fake. Being attentive and skeptical can help you avoid falling victim to these con games.
