This session, led by arts educator, learning officer and curator Jon Sleigh, considers applied ethics in queering with audiences and how we find our voice in queer spaces. We discuss advocacy vs the institutional voice, agency, language and representation. Trust as a narrative is featured here - how do we build, hold, develop (or potentially lose) queer audiences? In asking 'To queer or not to queer?' we also consider historical narratives on the subject of ‘outing’ the past. Jon draws throughout on examples from his portfolio, including 'Michelangelo Queered' with the National Gallery, 'Audience with a Queen' with the National Portrait Gallery, and 'Queer History Tours' with the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.
This is the second of three online training sessions focused on queering spaces and collections with audiences, hosted by the Queer Heritage and Collections Network and supported by our funder National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Please note that only the first 30 minutes of the session were recorded, to allow a free space for participant discussion in the remainder of the webinar.
