The 48th Sounkyo Onsen Ice Fall Festival, a winter tradition in the Sounkyo hot-spring resort in the town of Kamikawa, opened on January 28. Testing of the blue, green and other colored lights that illuminate the 30 ice statues of various sizes, took place on the 27th, creating a fantastic sight in the hot spring resort amid the mountains.
The theme of this year's event is ‘To the Future,’ which expresses the desire to create a new future as the coronavirus pandemic seems to be on the wane. The venue was lined with ice statues in the shape of temples, bridges, domes and other structures. The highest ice statue is 13 meters tall, and there are several observation floors from which visitors can view the entire venue.
The venue was open to the public for the lighting test on the 27th, and tourists enjoyed taking photographs. A man visiting on vacation from Malaysia said, “I was overwhelmed by the beautiful sight.”
The venue is open from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. until March 12. Organizers ask for a donation of 500-yen per adult at the time of admission. For details, please visit the Sounkyo Tourism Association website: https://sounkyo.net/hyoubaku/
