The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which lasted for two days, was a catastrophic event that destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The initial blast launched an enormous column of volcanic ash and gas, reaching to an estimated height of 33 kilometers. In 1874, the site of Pompeii opened its gates to the public and a trip to Pompeii-Vesuvius became a cultural attraction. The Gran Cono trail is the most popular route among visitors offering a path along the lower rim of the volcano's crater and breathtaking views.
