Stay out of your own way - The best method of airflow control in an industrial fan steers clear of the air stream. Learn why a variable frequency drive may be the best way to do it.
AirPro Sales Manager and Senior Application Engineer Chet White demonstrates how the VFD works for flow control in this 1½-minute video.

We’re highlighting the best method of flow control - a VFD. So why is a VFD your best method of flow control? Most other methods of flow control involve putting something into the gas stream, so you have to use some type of damper that restricts your flow going in or going out of the fan. A VFD is external, so it varies the frequency of your motor.
And so if you’re using a VFD and let’s say your issue is flow - you need a certain amount of flow out of your fan. What if you need 20,000cfm and when you start running it your fan is delivering 22,000cfm? You need less - slow it down.
So a VFD operates, typically in a standard application, where you reduce the speed by the amount of volume you want to eliminate. So if you want to get rid of 2000cfm and you’re operating at 22,000, slow it down by a factor of 20,000:22,000. Conversely, if you need more and you have the amperage available to do it, speed it up.
So a VFD gives you a lot of control, and it keeps everything out of the airstream so you don’t have any static pressure losses as a result of using this piece of equipment to modulate your air flow.
