Guru K Sivaramakrishna Iyer (1924 - 2018)

Guru K Sivaramakrishna Iyer, Flute Vidwan was born to Vaikom Kittu Bhagavathar and Kavery Ammal at Vaikom, Kerala and learnt his lessons of Carnatic music from his father who was a vocalist, violinist and percussionist. As far as Flute is concerned, he was an autodidact (self-taught) flautist. His first performance was at the tender age of 9 at Ettumanur temple, Kerala and continued playing flute till the age of 90.

His respect for all forms of music was boundless, embracing the diverse branches such as Carnatic, Hindustani, film music, Natya Sangeetham, Namasangeerthanam, and orchestral ensembles. In each of these realms, his presence was not just felt but celebrated. But He strongly believed that Carnatic (Indian Classical) provide a strong base for musicians to change or adopt to other forms of music.

Amongst the corridors of music, he is fondly revered as "Flute Swami," a name that resonates with the soul of every musician who has performed with him.

He managed well both of his entirely two different professions, as Section Head in LIC of India & as a busy flautist, His warm welcome to all ages and simplicity in life, gave him a wide range of friends beyond all barriers.

He was a graded artist of AIR and his concerts were broadcasted since pre-independence times, i.e. thru Travancore Radio under the, The Princely State of Travancore. As a widely accepted flautist, he has been honored by many of the musical Sabhas and cultural organizations.

He was a “role model” for many, and will continue to be so…
