How do disabled communities navigate, survive & recover from natural disasters when existing systems & institutions reinforce ableist policies even under "normal" conditions? What wisdom can we learn from disabled communities about how we might create more accessible, holistic, trauma-informed responses to natural and manmade disasters in the future?
This panel features disabled community members, advocates and organizers from the Greater New Orleans region. Panelists will reflect on the impacts of Hurricane Ida, the gaps in resources and accessibility for disabled communities, and the importance of centering the wisdom of disability justice organizers in building more just and inclusive responses to disaster.
