STORYLINE
Many in Cyprus have had to learn a different meaning to the word haircut - namely cuts in the size of people's bank accounts - the hard way.
Nicosia-based hairdresser George Sofroniou is one of the many affected by the financial crisis in the country.
Co-owner of a hair salon in the centre of the city, Sofroniou knows his service is one of the first to suffer if cash is tight.
"Hairdressing is considered to be a kind of luxury business, that is where people will start saving more money," Sofroniou said.
A step higher on the business chain, the supplier of the hair products serving Sofroniou's shop is happy he was far-sighted enough to move his cash out of country in time.
"I anticipated issues last year, when Greece also had the question of whether we're going to remain in the euro and the consequences of that for Cyprus as well, so luckily we transferred monies in the middle of last year over to the UK," said Athos Angelides, owner of AAE, a company importing hair care products into Cyprus.
The move has spared him from the potential 'haircut' that is expected to hit savers with deposits of more than 100,000 euros (128,000 US dollars) at either of two main banks - Bank of Cyprus and Laiki.
His boss, Angelidis, having avoided the haircut of his bank account, has still been affected by the banking crisis.
